On February 19, 2022, Doja took to Instagram Live to preview the song while in the studio. She later tweeted of the song on Twitter after the live ended, stating "The songs called What U Wanting by ICEJJFISH". However, the tweet was later removed. She said she's dropping the song on SoundCloud first, eventually doing so a day later.
