Background

Doja Cat first previewed the song on Instagram Live in May 2018. It was said she worked on this song and two others with frequent producer Yeti Beats during that month, one of them possibly being the demo version of "Shine". Only a 1-minute-long snippet of this live was shared, stopping right before the first verse.

On December 11, 2021, Doja Cat went to Instagram Live again and previewed some older unreleased songs, one of which being "Sober". It was previewed until the very start of the first verse.
