The song was made on January 16, 2018, during livestreams Doja held on both Instagram and Periscope, the title of the Periscope live writing "I hate you all". The song was previewed again during another Periscope livestream around January - February 2018, and previewed again during an Instagram Live on March 20, 2018.
On January 24, 2018, Doja had done a poll on Twitter asking fans which song she should release during February. The poll consisted of "STFU", "ROTATION", "LOOK" and "BABY". As "BABY" was winning, Doja redone the poll as people thought "BABY" was referring to her (at the time) upcoming album Baby, that was later retitled to Amala. She replaced that song on the poll with "WEREWOLF". Despite this, none of the songs ever saw a release.
