Purrr! is the debut extended play (EP) by Doja Cat. It was released independently on August 5, 2014, by MAU Records and distributed by Kemosabe and RCA Records. Majority of the songs were recorded by Doja Cat in a DIY-style using a variety of instrumentals which she found online from producers such as Mndsgn, Evil Needle, and Dream Koala.[1]

Background[]

On November 8, 2012, Doja Cat uploaded a laptop-recorded version of "So High" to her SoundCloud account. This song would later be repackaged and serve as the EP's sole single and third track on March 13, 2014.

On July 28, 2013, Doja Cat uploaded an early version of the EP's second track "Nunchucks" to SoundCloud before taking it down years later. This version was later re-recorded for the EP.

Recording sessions for the EP likely started during September 2013, when Doja shared a short clip of herself in the studio as she was working on "No Police", the EP's fourth track and promotional single. This was the first song that was recorded solely for Purrr! from the beginning.

During December 2013, Doja Cat recorded the remaining tracks "Beautiful" and "Control" as teased on now-deleted posts on Instagram. Doja later uploaded an earlier version of "Beautiful" in February 2014 before shortly deleting it.

On March 13, 2014, "So High" was officially released on streaming services. At the time of the release of Purrr!, "So High" had amassed over 712 thousand streams on SoundCloud and over 240 thousand views on the official music video,[2] that was later released on March 26, 2014.

On March 25, 2014, Doja Cat did the photoshoot for the EP, shooting the official cover artwork.

On July 30, 2014, Doja Cat tweeted "MY EP IS OUT IN 10 DAYS I JUST PEED A LITTLE THINKING ABOUT IT".

On August 1, 2014, Doja posted to Facebook and Instagram "EP PURRR! Out on iTunes 8/5" and changed her banner to promoting the EP.

David Turner of The Fader highlighted the song "Control" as "a breezy seaside joyride built on slow builds and wavy echoes" and also praised Doja Cat's "spacey singing style" throughout the record.[5] Briana Cheng of Dazed wrote that on "No Police", she "fiercely meows" and "sassily" raps and sings over a "mild" guitar riff as part of the "mollifying" beat, notably humming from the police sirens from Lil Wayne's 2008 single "Mrs. Officer".[6] Petar Kujundzic of Hypebeast described Purrr! as "a fine list of bass-heavy, alternative R&B tracks" and highlighted the song "No Police" for "offering the best of her vocal and lyrical abilities".[7] Writing for Illsociety, Kelly Hawkins praised Doja Cat's "brazen raps and airy vocals".[8]
