"MOOO!" is the sixteenth and last track on the deluxe version of Doja Cat's debut studio album, Amala, and fourteenth track on Japanese edition of Doja's second album, Hot Pink. The song was released as the third single from Amala overall (and lead single from the deluxe edition), on August 31, 2018, alongside its official music video.
Background[]
On August 7, 2018, Doja Cat took to Instagram Live to produce and write a song in her bedroom, as she usually did, however she didn't want to make "another love song". The inspiration for the song was sparked by Doja's cow-print costume that she also wore throughout the song's music video. She stated in an interview for Genius, "This top was a huge distraction for me. I would go to hit the keys on the keyboard and I'd have [the sleeves] in the way, and then I was like, You know what? I'ma just make a song about cows." She premiered the song as an inside joke with her fans in early August 2018, not expecting it to go further than SoundCloud. She told Dazed, "We started it on Instagram live, just me and 60 other people, and we all had fun coming up with puns and metaphors."
Doja finished producing, recording, and writing the song in six hours while in her bedroom. The song used a sample of "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" by Wes Montgomery, which frequent producer Troy NōKA had chopped and sent to her the night before. After making a beat with the sample and recording vocals in Logic Pro, she immediately began filming the song's music video from her bedroom. According to Doja Cat, she completed the song and its video within 12.5 hours of one day.
After the song's music video was uploaded to YouTube on August 10, 2018, it gained over five million views in two weeks. Due to popular demand after the video's viral success, an updated single version was released for streaming and digital download on August 31, 2018, and she also recorded a clean version during Instagram Live on August 17, 2018, that was eventually scrapped and leaked years later.
