Background[]
On April 18, 2023, Doja Cat posted an early track listing of Scarlet to her Instagram stories, in which "Wet Vagina" was seen. She then went to Instagram Live and played short snippets of each song.
Doja Cat took to Instagram Live on June 18, 2023, previewing almost the entirety of "Gun" and "Balut" months before the album's release.[1] This version was likely a demo version, as some ad-libs could be heard that weren't present in the final release.
Doja Cat announced the release date of the album on August 30, 2023, as well as the final track list on September 12, 2023, revealing "Gun" to be the seventh track on the album. The song was leaked along with the rest of Scarlet days prior to its release on September 20, 2023.

In “Gun”, Doja Cat raps about sex by comparing it to using a firearm. The “gun” in this case refers to her partner’s best piece. The track houses many references all about that topic.
