"Go To Town" is a song by Doja Cat. It appears as the opening track on her debut studio album, Amala, released on March 30, 2018. It was previously released as the albums lead single on March 9, 2018, alongside its official music video.

Background

Before/around July 2017, Doja Cat would preview the song during livestreams on Periscope, however no footage currently exists.

Throughout November 2017, Doja performed the song at Lizzo's Good as Hell Tour as Doja was the opening act for this tour. This was months before the song's official release as the lead single off Amala in March 2018. Doja also confirmed the song and its video's existence sometime around early 2018 on a Periscope live; however, no footage currently exists.

The song was seen in the early tracklisting of Amala, an image posted by Doja Cat around 2017 - 2018 before the albums release. It can be seen serving as the first track in the 'alt tracks', with some cut songs seen in the image as well.

On the lyric site Genius, Doja Cat explained the process behind the song, stating: "I was in the studio when I thought of this. It was just a regular day. I wasn’t smoking. I wasn’t high or anything like that. I just kinda came up with it off the bat because the people I was working with, I’ve worked with them a long time. It’s just kind of natural with them. So, it was a quick process. I kinda just I came up with the hook first, and that fit with the beat. It’s a simple beat. That’s why it was kinda such a quick process."

Theme

During an interview for Genius, Doja explained the songs meaning, stating: "It’s like, if you’re not gonna go all the way in, don’t go at all. That’s pretty much it. It’s just a very feminist sort of female empowerment kind of message. If you want to get deep with it, it’s not so much about just giving head. It’s kind of about if a dude doesn’t want to do the whole shebang, then he can’t shebang, period. That’s it."
