"Freak" is a song by Doja Cat. It was released as promotional single through RCA Records and Kemosabe Records on August 7, 2020.[1] Originally uploaded exclusively to SoundCloud on November 10, 2018, it was repackaged and released commercially due to popular demand by fans online.[2]
Background[]
"Freak" was made on Instagram Live in July 2018, where Doja fully produced and wrote the song herself. She later sent the song to her friend in August 2018 to be remastered, then previewed on Instagram Live. It was eventually uploaded to SoundCloud on November 10, 2018, before officially being released on August 7, 2020.
Prior to its re-release, "Freak" had gained popularity on the video-sharing platform TikTok, where it had been used in over 1.2 million videos.[3] In late June 2020, Doja Cat teased multiple new songs on an Instagram Live which she stated would all be released together in an upcoming project.[4]
Alongside the announcement of "Freak", Doja Cat wrote that she had released the song to hold her fans off while she works on "a new surprise", Both a clean and explicit version were released digitally.[5][6] In November 2020, a limited edition vinyl release of the song was made available exclusively through Urban Outfitters to support 11/11 Singles Day.[7]
The song being officially released to all platforms on August 7, 2020, 3 years after its SoundCloud upload, was due to popular demand by fans online. The song samples the 1959 song, "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" by Paul Anka. It peaked at #21 on the Billboard US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.

- On March 11, 2025, Doja Cat pinned the song on her TikTok account. It's unknown why, however, it could be because the cheetah print cover artwork of "Freak" is indicative of an assumingly apparent theme in Doja's forthcoming album, Vie.
