Background

From 2014 - 2015, Doja Cat performed the song multiple times. The earliest known performance of the song was at Echo Park Rising's Soulection event on July 23, 2014, even before the release of Doja's debut EP, Purrr!, confirming the song to be the earliest recorded track on Amala. The song was then performed more than twice in 2015.

Around 2017 - 2018, Doja Cat shared the early tracklist of Amala before its release. The tracklist had some cut tracks and "Down Low" serving as the third track, next to it written "GRFM" (abbreviated for "get ready for mix") and "rewrite rap". Despite this, the song and its rap remained the same as it was performed earlier.

  • This is due to the song being recorded in 2014, prior to her debut EP's release, when she (most of the time) mainly used instrumentals she’d find from various producers on the internet.
