Doja Cat Wiki

Amala (originally titled Baby and The Bundle) is the debut studio album by American singer and rapper Doja Cat. It was released on March 30, 2018, through Kemosabe Records and RCA Records. The album's deluxe version was released on March 1, 2019, and featured her breakthrough singles "Juicy", "Tia Tamera", and "MOOO!". Her first commercial release in four years, Doja Cat has expressed strong disdain towards the record for a number of reasons.

Upon its release, Amala was initially a critical and commercial failure and was largely ignored by critics. In August 2018, the album and Doja Cat gained attention when her novelty song "MOOO!" became an internet meme. As a result, songs "Candy" and "Juicy" became sleeper hits, and the album debuted on the Billboard 200 chart in August 2019. Amala would eventually peak at number 138 on the chart in November 2019, coinciding with the release of her second studio album, Hot Pink.

Background[]

Doja Cat started recording sessions for the album sometime around 2014, with the eleventh track "Down Low" recorded sometime before July 2014, which was even prior to her debut EP, Purrr!. However it’s more likely the song was cut from the EP. Recording sessions likely officially started in late-2014, working with producer Cambo, where in October 2014 they worked on the cut album tracks "You Know I Wanna" and "Walk Away".

On May 26, 2015, Doja Cat tweeted "EXCITED FOR THIS ALBUM U FUCKIN HOES" and "ALBUM IS 90% READY U FUCKIN EXCITED ASS PPL IF U DNT CARE U SHOULD SUCK MY BIKE SUCK IT. bich". However, the tweets have since been deleted. Weeks later on April 2, 2015, Doja tweeted "Finally back in this bih ass studio y'all happy yah bishis?", proceeding to share a snippet of a song that was also later cut from the album, "Handle It".

Throughout 2015, Doja Cat performed "Down Low" during multiple shows, including a then-new recorded track "Body Language" in August 2015 at the Echo Park Rising event. The song was performed again in February 2016 at the ASPB Winter SOULstice. Throughout 2016, Doja worked on more album tracks like “White Lie” and “Weather” (both scrapped) and often previewed songs on currently unavailable livestreams on Periscope, like “Kingdom” (also scrapped).

On September 8, 2016, Doja uploaded two of the albums' tracks, "Candy" and "Casual", to her SoundCloud account. "Candy" had an entirely different instrumental and was taken down a few days later. "Casual" is still available on her page and only features very minor differences, both later revamped for the album.

On December 8, 2016, Doja Cat uploaded "Roll with Us" to her SoundCloud account before shortly taking it down and becoming lost. This song would later become the albums sole promotional single.

On April 5, 2017, Doja tweeted "My album name will be called "The Bundle" feat. Tracks stay tuned <3". On June 2, 2017, the albums fifth track “Fancy” was recorded. During July 2017, Doja Cat would preview "Go to Town" during livestreams on Periscope, however no footage currently exists. The song would later be released as the first single from the album.

On October 20, 2017, Doja tweeted "My album is called "Baby"" and on October 22, 2017, she tweeted "January". However, all of these tweets have since been taken down.

Throughout November 2017, Doja Cat served as the opening act for Lizzo's Good as Hell Tour, where Doja performed majority of the tracks from Amala months before their release. She also played the songs during Periscope livestreams while getting ready prior to the shows.

Sometime around 2017-2018, Doja posted a working track list for the album, where some scrapped tracks can be seen.

On February 1, 2018, "Roll with Us" was released as the albums sole promotional single, also serving as her first official solo release since "So High" in March of 2014. On March 9, 2018, "Go to Town" was released as the albums lead single alongside its music video. On March 23, 2018, "Candy" was released as the albums second single.

On March 26, 2018, Doja Cat made an Instagram post revealing the albums cover artwork and release date, captioned "3/30". Alongside this, Doja's label announced the album via X (formerly known as Twitter). It was also likely the cover shoot was done in early 2018.

Artwork[]

Her label said that the album "unlocks a sweetly sexy world soundtracked by wild hip-hop, twisted pop, and smoked-out R&B. Asserting a feline-esque dominance, her unapologetic charisma, charm, and confidence immediately take center stage."

Singles[]

The album's lead single, "Go to Town", was released on March 9, 2018, along with a music video. The single "MOOO!" was released on August 10, 2018, along with a music video as a non-album single, but it was later announced that it was the first single of the deluxe edition of the album. Another single for the deluxe edition, titled "Tia Tamera", was released on January 31, 2019, as a collaboration with American rapper Rico Nasty and its music video was released on February 21, 2019. The third and final song of the deluxe edition, titled "Juicy", was originally released on March 1, 2019, for the deluxe edition of Amala, but on August 15, 2019, a remix of the song was released with American rapper and singer Tyga as a single along with a music video. The version with Tyga was included on Doja Cat's second studio album, "Hot Pink."

Promotional singles[]

"Roll with Us" was released as the album's sole promotional single on February 1, 2018,[1] and entered the Spotify's Global Viral 50 chart upon release.[2]
