As Doja Cat dropped out of high school around 2012, she spent most of her days finding and downloading beats she found online and rapping over them using GarageBand on her laptop. Throughout November 2012, she uploaded many of these songs, one of which included this song.
"BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME" didn't gain any attention until around 2020, when the song went viral on the app TikTok. The song was taken down on Doja's SoundCloud around 2015–2016 and remains as one of her most popular SoundCloud-exclusive uploads, despite not even being officially released at all.

Commonly misunderstood as a suicide note, Doja vents her cycles of pain over the electronically distorted instrumental, revealing her inner thoughts and extreme subjects such as self-harm. There are also parts of the verse where Doja reflects on the exploitation that often accompanies fame and the pressures that artists face, particularly young women in the industry, who may feel objectified or misunderstood.[2]
